Former Basketball Player Demetrius Calip Passes Away, Demetrius Calip Cause of Death
The son of former Michigan basketball guard Demetrius Calip confirms that his father has passed away.
Demetrius Calip II, Calip’s son, announced his father’s death on Instagram on Sunday. “Dad. 2/5/23. Calip II declared his undying affection for his followers, writing,
“Love you forever” in an Instagram story. In his words, “I have nothing except gratitude and joy for having had such a wonderful father.”
Calip senior, although just 53 years old, was a backup guard for the 1989 national champion Michigan Wolverines.
Demetrius Calip, a guard for Michigan, passed away.
Calip scored 20 points in Michigan’s first four NCAA Tournament wins, including wins over Xavier (9 points), South Alabama (3 points), North Carolina (2), and Virginia (1), on the team’s way to the 1989 NCAA National Championship (6 points).
Calip played for Michigan from 1987 to 1991, and in his final season as a starter, he averaged 20.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 35.2 minutes per game, according to the school’s advertisement. He started 42 of the 96 games he played in and finished with career averages of 9.6 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.9 boards per contest.
